7 Essential steps to help you move to the cloud

It’s widely understood that cloud-based environments can bring significant benefits to enterprises including improved cost savings and business agility. Even with this knowledge, some companies are still reluctant to make the switch from legacy IT systems over to the cloud. This is because enterprises are generally led to believe that the transfer of applications to the cloud is easy, but the process is usually a bit more involved than just flicking a switch.

No cloud is an island. Applications need to interact seamlessly with each other for the IT stack to function properly. My whitepaper, A Practical Guide to Cloud Onboarding, discusses the challenges that occur when migrating applications to the cloud and how a careful planning period can lead to a painless onboarding process.

“Onboarding” refers to the deployment of application workloads into a virtual private or public cloud environment. Significant challenges for onboarding arise from the fact that most applications running in a legacy IT environment are not designed to run in the cloud. Therefore, successful migration to the cloud is dependent on a careful and thorough planning period. I’ve compiled a list of 7 essential steps to help your business through the onboarding process.

  1. Define the workload
  2. Provision cloud resources
  3. Establish a connectivity bridge
  4. Deploy the workload
  5. Ensure seamless two-way access
  6. Test and validate
  7. Discontinue the old service

A more detailed description of each of these steps can be found in my latest whitepaper, A Practical Guide to Cloud Onboarding.
